May is a time of flowers, baby animals, green grass and this months pattern design inspired by magnolia tree buds. Their life is fleeting and their buds only last for a short period of time but without them, the tree would not grow the leaves that remain for the rest of the summer. The regeneration of new life. The reminder that every day is a new day.
This month I will be represented by Pattern Observer Design Studio at SURTEX® held annually in New York City. It is the premier trade show for sourcing surface and textile designs to thousands of retailers, licensees and manufacturers looking to find new prints and patterns to use on textiles, home goods, stationery, clothing and more. It is a very exciting time for me and a first time having representation by a wonderful group of dedicated surface pattern designers who believe in me as well as a large textile lab of colleagues. I am feeling so much gratitude. The opportunity to sell my designs exclusively and/or to sell them as art licensing is what I have been working tirelessly on for the past 4 years.
Some years back, I went through a very dry period as an artist that lasted close to 25 years even though prior to that, I was a successful art director also pursuing fine art. Sometimes success does not go in the direction that you would hope and is also not a monetary achievement. Your journey in life is yours alone and the pearls of wisdom I can share are to listen to your intuition...deeply. I lost my way with my intuition and while I could say that in hindsight, I lost a lot of time...I also now feel a huge birth in my heart and soul. Would this feeling I have now, come about if I had not lost my way for so many years? A life changing and traumatic experience 4 years ago has been the reboot and I am cultivating the good that has come out of those very difficult ashes. For me, hitting bottom...gave me the opportunity to truely know how strong I am and how passionate I am as an artist. Again, I feel grateful. Everyday...the gift of life and gratitude.
